Fujiya said it had left its full-year forecast unchanged when it announced first-half results on July 28, expecting higher beverage shipments, a recovery in customer traffic at its Western confectionery (cake) business and steady confectionery sales. In the July-September quarter, however, record prolonged rain and downpours, an earthquake in Kumamoto and growing consumer thrift led shoppers to hold back, with weak sales of higher-priced cakes and mainstay large-bag confectionery products. Sales came in about 6% below the initial plan, and packaging and energy costs, driven up partly by the situation in the Middle East, exceeded assumptions, weighing on operating profit. The company expects consumer thrift in response to food price increases to persist in the October-December quarter, its peak demand season.

In results released the same day, Fujiya reported January-September sales up 4.4% at ¥87.66 billion and an operating loss of ¥113 million, compared with an operating profit of ¥1.07 billion a year earlier. Net profit fell 93.7% to ¥56 million. Western confectionery sales fell 4.4%, while confectionery sales rose 7.9%, including a 44.7% rise in beverages.

Fujiya is a subsidiary of Yamazaki Baking Co., Ltd. (2212).
