Japanese supermarket operator Okuwa Co., Ltd. (8217) on Sept. 25 cut its consolidated net profit forecast for the fiscal year ending February 2027 by 92.3% to ¥50 million from ¥650 million, and now expects a first-half operating loss of ¥57 million.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime-listed company lowered its full-year revenue forecast to ¥250.8 billion from the ¥255.5 billion it announced on April 6, 2026. Operating profit and ordinary profit were each cut 38.1% to ¥1.3 billion from ¥2.1 billion. Earnings per share are now projected at ¥1.23, versus ¥15.98 previously.

For the first half ended Aug. 20, operating revenue is now seen 2.4% below the previous forecast at ¥123,227 million, with an operating loss of ¥57 million against a previously projected ¥600 million profit. Ordinary profit is estimated at ¥13 million, down 98.1% from the ¥680 million forecast, and the company expects a net loss of ¥187 million attributable to owners of the parent, compared with a ¥300 million profit forecast. On a non-consolidated basis, full-year net profit is now forecast at zero, versus ¥600 million previously.

Okuwa said the revision stemmed mainly from its supermarket business. Despite promotions aimed at drawing customers, stronger-than-expected consumer thrift amid rising prices limited gains in customer traffic and items purchased, leaving first-half existing-store sales 2.3% below plan. Gross margin fell 0.2 percentage point short of plan as the company pursued a pricing policy amid unstable purchase costs driven by higher raw material prices and currency moves. Selling, general and administrative expenses were broadly on plan but did not offset the revenue shortfall.

For the second half, the company expects some improvement from the first half but lowered its existing-store sales assumption by 1.0% from its initial plan. Rising labor and energy costs were already factored into the initial plan, it said.
