The company said a prolonged weak yen and higher raw material and resource prices drove a series of price hikes on daily necessities, raising consumers' perceived inflation and pushing sales below the previous forecast.

In retail, sales were strong at new stores in the Tokyo metropolitan, Keihanshin and Kyushu areas and at renovated stores, but higher purchasing costs reduced gross profit. Import wholesale sales grew on inbound tourist demand and sales of low-priced whisky for households. Gross profit rose at the Rokkosan distillery and in real estate, where some properties held for sale were sold well above book value.

Higher selling, general and administrative expenses, mainly personnel costs, led to the operating profit cut, while higher financing costs following the Bank of Japan's policy review further reduced ordinary profit. A gain on real estate sales booked as extraordinary income was outweighed at the net level by those factors and a partial reversal of deferred tax assets.

After reviewing the recoverability of deferred tax assets, the company booked a ¥100 million income tax adjustment loss in the fourth quarter as taxable income eliminated tax loss carryforwards, and expects a full-year total of ¥101 million.
