The company said customer numbers and items per purchase fell short of plan, leaving sales below target. Gross margin is expected to hold at the prior-year level thanks to integrated purchasing and a larger share of deli products, but to miss plan due to price responses amid inflation and intensifying competition. Cost cuts exceeding plan will not offset lower operating gross profit. It also expects extraordinary losses from store impairments tied to weaker earnings, as well as store closure and asset retirement losses for structural reforms from the next fiscal year.

In the six months to Aug. 31, operating revenue rose 14.0% to ¥544.8 billion, helped by sales at Aeon Food Style, launched in March 2026. The group posted an operating loss of ¥3.28 billion, compared with an operating profit of ¥168 million a year earlier, and a net loss of ¥4.65 billion versus ¥1.21 billion. Selling, general and administrative expenses rose 16.3% on higher labor, promotion and renovation costs, outpacing 13.6% growth in gross profit. The equity ratio fell to 49.7% from 52.9% at the end of February 2026.

The group, which also owns supermarket operators Maruetsu, Kasumi and Inageya, set an interim dividend of ¥8.00 per share and left its annual dividend forecast unchanged at ¥16.00.

The company plans to file its half-year securities report on Oct. 13, 2026, and to begin paying the interim dividend on Oct. 16, 2026.
