UOGroup (2683), a Japanese seafood retailer, posted a first-half operating loss of ¥65 million, wider than the ¥20 million loss it had forecast, even as net sales of ¥4.71 billion topped guidance.

H1 net sales¥4.71 billion
H1 operating loss¥65 million (forecast: ¥20 million)
H1 net loss attributable to owners¥33 million
FY net profit forecast (unchanged)¥30 million

The company reported results for the six months ended Aug. 31, 2026, the first half of the fiscal year ending February 2027, on Oct. 14 and said they diverged from the forecast it published on April 14.

Net sales¥4.50 billion¥4.71 billion
Operating loss¥20 million¥65 million
Ordinary loss¥20 million¥34 million
Net loss attributable to owners¥30 million¥33 million

Sales rose 1.6% year on year, which the company attributed to stronger existing stores, three new store openings and solid e-commerce sales including through Japan's furusato nozei hometown tax donation program. Rising procurement costs, along with in-store merchandise and inventory adjustments forced by sudden unseasonable summer weather, cut the gross margin to 45.0% from 45.4%, widening the operating loss from ¥26 million a year earlier. Cooperation payments received from developers for new store openings held the ordinary loss to ¥34 million. Loss per share was ¥13.47.

Fresh fish segment sales rose 1.9% to ¥4.069 billion, while segment profit fell 15.3% to ¥207 million. Previously unconsolidated subsidiary Uoya Co. was consolidated from this period after taking over two stores and a wholesale business from Uokin Co. on Aug. 1.

UOGroup kept its full-year forecast of ¥9.5 billion in net sales, ¥70 million in operating profit and ¥30 million in net profit attributable to owners, along with a year-end dividend forecast of ¥10 per share.

Next steps: The company is scheduled to file its semiannual securities report on Oct. 15, 2026. It said year-end holiday sales heavily affect seafood retail results and are difficult to forecast now, and that it will announce its full-year outlook once results become foreseeable.
